For some reasons you may cancel your trip, and cancel your ticket. There would be penalties or fine imposed. Sometimes discounted or even regular ticket also imposed by airline, especially passenger who didn’t show up.

Everyone could have this trouble, however you can report to airline. After inquiries, airline will replace with another one. Actually ticket is like cash money, if you lost it, mean you lost forever. So always keep your ticket safely.
Onward ticket
There are immigration requirement for some country that you have a ticket out of that country. If you don’t have plan yet for your next trip, better buy cheap onward ticket to neighboring country. Other ways you can buy ticket from reliable airline which can be refunded later on.
Courier fare
Some business may need to send an important document or something valuable in security and quickly. So a courier was hired to do this job, usually airline will offer a discounted ticket. Perhaps in very lowest price, usually this courier will give all baggage allowance, and get only carry-on luggage.
Travel period
There are peak season and off peak season, usually airline had vary ticket price. For example if you travel during peak season and return during off peak season, you have to pay the peak season. Usually ticket price depend to the departure time, if in the off peak season, you will get less price.
Promotional fare
There are a time that airline offer special fare, usually during off peak season to attract more passenger, However this discounted ticket would have a limit, and you should ask to the airline in advance.
