However in recent years, tariffs dropping everywhere around the world, Singapore is not the shopper’s heaven anymore. The prices of items may vary or similar with your home prices. Before you buy any good, you should know the prices at home, and shop around to compare the prices. Singapore also has some local industries to protect, that’s why the prices may vary in every items.
Orchard Road
The major shopping complexes around Orchard Rd, they have a mind-boggling array of department stores and shops all manner of things. The prices aren’t necessarily the best, but the range is superb and this is certainly a good place for high quality, brand-name items. The following is an overview and is by no mean exhaustive.
Orchard Point, Orchard Plaza and Cup Page Plaza, clustered together near Somerset MRT station, have a variety of shop and food outlet. Next along is Centerpoint, one of the liveliest shopping center, with good bookshops on the 4th floor and carpet on the 5th floor. Past Peranakan Place, Orchard Emerald has watches and electronics, and the basement has a large supermarket, food stalls and restaurants. Next door, OG is a straightforward department store.
Across Orchard Rd next to Somerset MRT station, the Specialist shopping center is older and quieter. It has the John Little department store and a good range of sporting goods shops. On the corner of Orchard Rd and Orchard link is Ngee Ann City, which houses the large Takashimaya department store, which itself houses the giant Kinokuniya bookstore. The basement is good for food, especially Japanese food, while the individual shops are dominated by exclusive outlet.
Colonial District
Raffles City is architecturally one of the most impressive shopping center in Singapore and has some interesting small shops, as well as the Sogo department store. East of Raffles City, Marina Square has a huge array of shops in a massive complex, which also includes three hotels and plenty of restaurants. Raffles Hotel has a shopping area, which, as you would expect, is firmly up market with designer clothes, collectibles, antiques and art.
Stamford House, on the corner of Stamford Rd and Victoria St, is beautifully restored building with a host of shops selling furniture, paintings, home-fittings and knick-knacks. Farther north Bugis Junctions on Victoria St comprises shophouse recreation covered by an atrium, the large Seiyu department store, and numerous interesting boutiques, consumer electronics, and a branch of the Kinokuniya bookstore. Near Sim Lim Square is known as the place to buy computer in Sim Lim Tower.
Chinatown
Chinatown is popular shopping area with local flavour. The People’s Park Complex and People’s Park center are good place to shop. They form a large complex with plenty of electronics, clothing, and department stores. The electronics are only as cheap as you make them.
The Chinatown Complex has an interesting market for everyday goods and cheap shops. Chinatown Point specializes in craft shops. A good place for hunt antiques, collectibles and all sorts of interesting knick-knacks are the street near the Sri Mariamman Temple.
